JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida baseball team looked like a well-oiled baseball machine on Friday night in its 5-2 win over Stetson at Harmon Stadium.
Junior starting RHP Ty Pryor baffled Stetson all night long, striking out nine batters and allowing just one earned run on five hits to pick up his fourth win of the season. More importantly, he was dead on in the strike zone, not walking anyone for the first time this season in a start.
Sophomore left fielder Andrew Hannon led UNF (22-17, 12-10 Atlantic Sun Conference) at the plate with the game-winning two-run double in the fifth inning. Sophomore second baseman T.J. Thompson and senior center fielder T.J. Gaudy both had two hits.
It didn't take long for the Ospreys to answer Stetson's lone run in the top of the second inning. UNF countered in the bottom of the inning when Andy Warren stretched a single into a double and sophomore catcher Michael Gropper drove him home on an RBI single through the left side. Thompson gave the Ospreys the 2-1 lead when his RBI base hit up the middle allowed Gaudy to cross the plate.
Stetson (15-23, 6-13) tied it in the third, scoring an unearned run off Pryor when Justin Bass struck out but reached base and advanced to third on a throwing error by Gropper. Bass went on to score on a groundout by Frank Florio. After that, Pryor was nearly flawless. He went on to retire the next eight batters
The Ospreys took charge in the bottom of the fifth when senior Chad Knight clobbered an RBI double down the right field line that allowed Thompson to score. Senior Travis Martin followed it up with his own double, which set the table for Hannon's bases clearing two-bagger.
Junior closer Tyler Stohr made sure it was time for the Hatters to ride off into the sunset when he entered the game in the eighth inning. Stohr took no prisoners, retiring six of the seven batters he faced and striking out three en route to his 10th save of the season. Stohr and Pryor combined to hold Stetson hitters to five hits.
UNF improved to 19-7 when tallying at least 10 hits. The Ospreys are now 8-6 against in-state opponents this season.
The Ospreys will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Stetson at Harmon Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on WBOB-AM 1320 in Jacksonville and will be aired on ASUN.TV.
