JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The University of North Florida baseball team figured out what it had to on Saturday to redeem itself – play sound defense, produce timely hits and not make pitching mistakes. Everything went according to plan for the Ospreys in their doubleheader sweep of East Tennessee State.
The sophomore triple threat of
Andrew Hannon,
Preston Hale and T.J. Thompson led UNF (15-11, 7-8 Atlantic Sun Conference), combining to go 12-for-25 with seven RBIs and seven runs scored. Hale scored three runs and blasted two doubles.
UNF got on the scoreboard first in both games and never trailed to win by scores of 9-5 and 8-2. The Ospreys hit .459 as a team with runners on base and were 15-for-32 with two outs.
After a scoreless first two innings in game one, Thompson slipped an RBI single through the right side to drive in sophomore
Michael Gropper. Senior
Chad Knight capped the scoring in the top of the third with an RBI single that allowed Thompson to score.
ETSU (6-19, 6-9) cut the Ospreys' lead to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but UNF distanced itself from the Buccaneers with a gigantic four-run fifth that was highlighted by a towering three-run home run by senior
Travis Martin.
The Ospreys went back to work in the top of the seventh when a two-run single by Hannon put their lead at 8-4. Senior
Andy Warren padded UNF's lead in the top of the ninth with an RBI sacrifice fly that drove in Hannon.
Junior closer
Tyler Stohr drove the Bucs off the plank and fed them to the sharks with his dominating relief performance. Stohr pitched the final 1.2 innings and didn't allow any hits while striking out two to pick up his sixth save of the season, matching his save total from 2007. Junior RHP
Spencer Jones improved to 3-1 after tossing 5.2 innings and allowing four runs on nine hits.
Hale put the Ospreys up 1-0 in the first inning of game two with an RBI single up the middle. Freshman
Robbie Collier followed it up in the second inning with a single that drove in senior
Andy Warren to give UNF a 2-1 lead.
The Ospreys upped its lead to 5-1 with three runs in the fourth, which proved to be more than enough for UNF to seize control of the game. Sophomore LHP
John Atteo had his best outing of the season, allowing just two runs on nine scattered hits along with three strikeouts to improve his record to 3-1.
Junior RHP
Ty Pryor picked up his first career save with his stifling three innings of relief. Pryor allowed just one hit and struck out three.
Collier finished his day 3-for-7 with two runs scored. Gropper ended his day with two runs scored and a double. The Ospreys won their second consecutive A-Sun series and have now won six of their last seven.
The Ospreys will return to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday against regional rival Georgia Southern at Harmon Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on WBOB-AM 1320 and will also be shown live and on-demand on ASUN.TV.
