NASHVILLE - Sophomore Kaley Read put together another dominating performance with 20 kills and 11 digs to lead the University of North Florida women's volleyball team in a hard-fought 3-0 loss (16-25, 25-27, 17-25) to Lipscomb on Saturday.
It was the seventh double-double for Read and fifth time this season she has recorded at least 20 kills. She hit .300 for the match, marking the ninth time this year she has done so. Sophomore Chelsea Rabe notched a match-high 17 digs, while freshman Lizzy Manno had 10 digs.
UNF (8-12, 6-7 Atlantic Sun Conference) got stronger as the match went on and was able to finish with a positive hitting percentage after finishing in the red in the first set. The Lady Ospreys finished even with the Bisons in kills with 49 and had 10 more digs with 59.
"I feel like we are getting better as a team," head coach Kevin Campbell said. "We proved we can rally and play well together. The second set was really good. Marshay (Greenlee) stepped up in the set - not only with her hitting, but also with the energy she brought. Kaley had a very solid match. Our struggle right now is being able to close out the crucial point after being on the cusp of a win."
The second set was an exciting battle between the teams with 10 ties and three lead changes. UNF took its first solid lead of the set at 12-9 on a block by senior Bary Rasmussen and sophomore Danielle Lerch, followed by a Read and Agata Dawidowicz kill. A Read kill helped UNF take its largest lead of the set at 14-10.
The experience of the A-Sun's second place team set set in, as the Bisons came back to knot the set at 19 and again at 22. The Lady Ospreys put themselves in position to wrap up the set win twice - once on a kill by Read and the other time on a kill by freshman Shawna Metcalf - but Lipscomb continued to chip away and stole the win on consecutive kills by Katie Rose and Erin Pierce.
UNF continued the fight in the third set and got out to a 4-2 lead on two Read kills and a Dawidowicz ace. But once again Lipscomb snatched the momentum and closed out the match on an 8-3 run.
Sophomore Madie Belvin and freshman Julie Fye combined for 35 assists. Metcalf tallied two blocks. Rasmussen put down seven kills, while sophomore Marshay Greenlee had five kills - three of which came in the second set.
The Lady Ospreys will blast back into action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday to take on arch-rival Jacksonville on the JU Campus in the second contest of the SunTrust River City Rumble.
