UNF rumbles hard in classic battle

Kaley Read slides to 19 kills

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Kaley Read led the University of North Florida women's volleyball team with 19 kills in another classic battle with Jacksonville in the SunTrust River City Rumble at JU's Swisher Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

The Lady Ospreys (8-13, 6-8 Atlantic Sun Conference) had a late lead in the fourth set and looked like they were going to take it the distance, but a late rally by Jacksonville (14-8, 9-5) handed UNF a 3- 1 loss (20-25, 25-15, 15-25, 23-25). Read recorded her ninth double-double of the season.

"We played good volleyball," head coach Kevin Campbell said. "We have been struggling with playing together as a team and being aggressive throughout the match. They had trouble stopping Kaley's slide, which was helped by our solid passing. But I thought there were moments where JU pushed harder, and we didn't attack back under pressure, which was the deciding factor in the fourth set."

UNF put up a tough fight in the first set and had a good handle on things early on. A kill by Read put the Lady Ospreys up 12-9, but JU quickly turned the tide and went on a 7-1 run to take a 16-13 lead. It proved to be more than enough for the Dolphins, who hit .314 for the set. JU's Sara Bendorf had seven of her 17 kills in the set.

The match took a climactic turn for the Lady Ospreys in the second set. UNF hit the bulls-eye with a .387 hitting percentage in the set. Rasmussen notched five kills and hit .625 in the set. The Lady Ospreys used a 13-3 run to easily close out the set and tie it at one apiece.

After a the Dolphins turned the tables on UNF in the third set, the Lady Ospreys came back firing and put themselves in position to tie the match again. UNF took a 22-19 lead on a kill from Read, but the Dolphins snatched the momentum and sealed the win by going on a 6-1 run.

Junior Agata Dawidowicz had four service aces and eight kills. Sophomore Madie Belvin notched a double-double with 32 assists and 10 digs, while senior Bary Rasmussen had nine kills and two blocks.

The Lady Ospreys will return to action at 7 p.m. on Friday against East Tennessee State at UNF Arena. Live stats and live video will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
