UNF puts up big block in loss

Lady Ospreys record season-high 11 blocks

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior Agata Dawidowicz had a match-high 17 kills and sophomore Kaley Read had a double- double with 12 kills and 12 digs, but the University of North Florida women's volleyball team fell just short to Campbell 3-2 (25-15, 25-18, 21-25, 20-25, 11-15) on Friday night at UNF Arena.

Dawidowicz had her most accurate performance in over a month, hitting .342 (17-4-38) and putting down five aces. Sophomore Madie Belvin also had a solid night for the Lady Ospreys (8-9, 6-5 Atlantic Sun Conference) with match-highs of 37 assists and 17 digs to go along with five aces.

The Lady Ospreys put up more kills than the Camels (6-14, 4-7) and had a better hitting percentage, but it was Campbell's 13 blocks and its ability to make the UNF defense move that helped it inch out the win. UNF also dominated in the ace department, tying a season high with 13.

UNF demolished the Camels in the first set, holding Campbell to a .000 hitting percentage and having the sideout advantage 73 percent of the time. The Lady Ospreys also had four aces in the set, led by Belvin's two. With the set tied at nine, UNF snatched control and went on a 12-4 run to go up 21-13. Dawidowicz closed out the set with a kill on an assist from Belvin.

Dawidowicz helped lead UNF to an impressive second set win by going 3-for-6 on her attack attempts, while Belvin notched eight assists. With the score 15-13 in favor of the Camels, the Lady Ospreys charged back to take a 23-16 lead on a run that was sparked by two aces by Dawidowicz and an ace from Belvin. Consecutive kills by Read and sophomore Danielle Lerch helped UNF take a commanding 2-0 match lead.

Read and Dawidowicz combined for nine kills in the third set, but the Lady Ospreys hit .116 and could not hold on a to five-point lead. UNF was able to come back from a 20-17 deficit and knot it at 20, but Campbell outscored the Lady Ospreys 5-1 to win the set.

In the fourth set, Campbell went up 16-12 before UNF closed the gap to 18-17. But crucial errors by the Lady Ospreys helped the Camels go on a 7-3 run to seal the win and deadlock the match at two sets apiece.

Dawidowicz slammed down four kills in the deciding set and Belvin had two assists, but a 7-1 run by Campbell to begin the set proved to be too much for the Lady Ospreys to overcome. The Camels later went up 10-3, but despite the deficit, UNF refused to give up and went on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 12-9. Consecutive kills by Dawidowicz put a scare into the Camels, but Campbell's Caitlin Bendy was able to score the final point and seal the victory.

The Lady Ospreys were impressive on the block, putting up a season-high 11 blocks. Senior Bary Rasmussen led UNF with a season-high eight, while Lerch had five and Dawidowicz had four. Freshman libero Lizzy Manno recorded 15 digs, marking the third consecutive match she has finished with double-digit digs.

UNF will "think pink" when it returns to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday for a non-conference showdown with Seattle. In conjunction with the Side-Out Foundation, the Lady Ospreys will hold a DIG PINK! Rally before the match and will sell light pink UNF Volleyball t- shirts for $10 to raise money for breast cancer research. Live stats will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
