JOHNSON CITY, TENN. - The University of North Florida women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match (30-23, 30-21, 30-27) to a tough East Tennessee State squad on Saturday at Brooks Gymnasium.
UNF (3-12, 1-1 Atlantic Sun Conference) was led by Claire Yonutas' 12 kill, eight dig performance. Senior Maegan Weisert, who spent most of the season as a libero with her right shoulder injured, made a return at the outside hitter position and notched seven kills to go along with her team-high 16 digs.
ETSU (10-7, 2-0) out hit UNF .294 to .136 for the match. The Lady Ospreys notched five blocks, led by junior Bary Rasmussen's two. Freshman Madeline Belvin recorded 32 assists.
The Lady Ospreys stayed tight with the Bucs in game one but could not defend the strong ETSU attack. UNF held an early two point lead on a couple of different occasions, but ETSU went up for good when it went on a 7-2 run. The Buccaneers out hit the Lady Ospreys .375 to .171 and were led by Callie Kiselich's eight kills. Yonutas notched four kills in the game.
UNF didn't have any better luck in the second game, hitting .135 while sustaining the .444 attack of ETSU. UNF was able to jump out to a 4-3 lead on an attack error by Kiselich, but the Buccaneers went on a 13-4 run to take a 16-8 lead. The Lady Ospreys made a late run to pull to within four of the ETSU lead twice, but both times the Buccaneers countered with a strong attack that UNF couldn't handle.
Game three was neck-and-neck for most of the way, with 15 ties and six lead changes. Senior Amy Stroder notched four of her seven kills in the game. ETSU grabbed an 18-14 lead to create some distance in the game, but UNF answered back to lock the score at 22 on a kill from Weisert. The Bucs fired back to take a 27-25 lead, but the Lady Ospreys marched back to tie the score at 27 on a Yonutas kill. But two costly errors by UNF allowed ETSU to take control and seal the win.
UNF will return to action at 7 p.m. next Friday against A-Sun foe Kennesaw State at UNF Arena.
