STATESBORO, Ga. - The University of North Florida men's soccer team dropped its third consecutive match by a single goal on Wednesday afternoon when it lost 1-0 to homestanding Georgia Southern.
Daniel Smith scored on a breakaway give- and-go from Scott DeVault in the 56th minute to account for the game's only score. UNF outshot the Eagles (3-4-0) 13-9 and had 10-6 advantage on corner kicks, but the Ospreys (1-4-0) couldn't find the net in losing their fourth straight.
Akil DeFreitas led UNF with five shots, while Shareef Rajkumar had three. The story of the night for the Ospreys was the return of Taylor Unsinger in goal. The sophomore had missed the team's first four games this season with a rotator cuff injury. Freshman Andrew Calise started his fifth straight game and played a scoreless 45 minutes before Unsinger took over at halftime - allowing the game's only goal while also tallying a save.
Brian Young went the distance for the Eagles in goal, recording three saves in 90 minutes.
UNF outshot the Eagles 9-5 in the first half.
The Ospreys ended their five-game road swing to start the season on Wednesday and will finally play at home on Sept. 28 when they play host to former Peach Belt Conference foe and Atlantic Sun Conference newcomer USC Upstate. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Hodges Stadium.
