JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's volleyball team battled its heart out on Thursday at UNF Arena but couldn't muster up to the strength of the No. 8 Washington Huskies in a 3-0 loss (30-14, 30-12, 30-12).
UNF (1-10) was led by both Amy Stroder and Kavie Sturch, who had six kills each. Sturch also had eight digs. Freshman Kaley Read totaled two blocks.
The Lady Ospreys stuck with the Huskies (9-0) in the early going of game one, hanging within three points on three different occasions. But a 12-2 run by UW effectively shut the door on any comeback hopes of UNF and allowed the Huskies to wrap up the first game. UW outhit UNF .314 to .125 in the first game and recorded 15 kills.
After letting UW score the first three points in the second game, the Lady Ospreys came back to tie the score on kills from Stroder and Sturch and a block from Read and Claire Yonutas. But Washington took control again to go on an 11-0 run and take a 21-6 lead that proved to be insurmountable.
The Huskies did not let the Lady Ospreys come up for air in the third game, getting out to a 14-4 lead. UW closed out the game by outscoring UNF 16-8. Stroder recorded three of her kills in the final game. UW smothered UNF with its hitting, recording a mark of .400 compared to UNF's -.086.
UW was led by Stevie Mussie and Becky Perry, who both had 13 kills. Tamari Miyashiro led the Huskies defensively with 21 digs.
