NASHVILLE - The University of North Florida baseball team was able to put together a nice tune of precision pitching and timely hitting in the Music City on Friday night in a 5-2 win over Lipscomb at Marsh Stadium.
Senior starting LHP Brad Johnson (3-4) took out all of the pop from Bisons hitters, holding them to two early runs on seven scattered hits while striking out six batters in 7.1 innings of work. Junior Travis Martin, who began the game as the designated hitter, relieved Johnson on the mound and shut down Lipscomb in the final 1.2 innings to pick up his first career save. Martin didn't allow a hit and struck out one.
The Ospreys (12-18, 3-4 Atlantic Sun Conference) picked up their first road win of the season and snapped a two-game losing streak. UNF was led at the plate by senior right fielder Jon Dandridge, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
UNF got things started in the top of the second when senior first baseman Jimmy Glanville led off the inning with a home run blast to left field. It was Glanville's third round-tripper of the season and gave the Ospreys a 1-0 lead. But the Bisons fired back in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on a double by Shane Simpkins.
Dandridge helped the Ospreys regain the lead at 4-2 in the top of the fifth when his grounder went under the glove of the Bisons' second baseman Clay Lehning and allowed redshirt freshman shortstop Mycal Jones and junior second baseman Chad Knight to score. Jones led off the inning by reaching base on a walk and made it to second base on a balk.
Knight hammered a single to shallow right field that tempted Jones to try to score, but a strong throw by Simpkins made Jones rethink his thought. The hesitation got Jones caught in a rundown, which he barely escaped when he slid under the tag of Lipscomb third baseman Branden Cadavid.
The Ospreys added another run in the ninth when Jones scored on a sacrifice fly by Dandridge. Jones began the inning by reaching on Lehning's second error of the night. He then stole second when he escaped yet another rundown by the Bisons.
The series will continue at 1 p.m. tomorrow in Nashville with a doubleheader. Live stats will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
