UNF lets lead slip away

March 25, 2007

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Just when it looked like the University of North Florida baseball team would win a three-game series from the first-place East Tennessee State Buccaneers, the Ospreys let a three-run lead slip away in an 8-4 loss on Sunday at Harmon Stadium.

UNF (11-17, 2-4 Atlantic Sun Conference) was doomed by its bullpen and lack of clutch hitting. The Ospreys used four relievers, who combined to give up four runs on six hits. Freshman Ryan McCoy (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up a go-ahead single to ETSU (18-7, 5-1) in the top of the sixth. Sophomore RHP Antonio Franzese was a bright spot in the Osprey bullpen, as he lasted 2.2 innings and allowed two hits while striking out three.

Senior catcher James Belyea had a break out performance at the plate, going 4-for-4. His day behind the plate was arguably as impressive, as he tagged out a runner at home on a throw from senior left fielder Damon Olinto, threw out a base runner in a stolen base attempt and picked off a base runner at first base.

Senior first baseman Jimmy Glanville knocked in two runs while both right fielder Jon Dandridge and designated hitter Travis Martin went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Dandridge notched his 12th multiple hit game this season and extended his hitting streak to six games.

Freshman starting LHP John Atteo cruised along through 5.2 innings with a 4-2 lead, but a two-run home run by ETSU's Justin Aughey in the top of the sixth knocked Atteo out of the game and tied it at four.

Atteo allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out four in the no-decision. After the Bucs tied it, the wheels came off for the Ospreys, as ETSU totaled six runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take an insurmountable four-run lead.

The game started out picture perfect for the Ospreys when Glanville knocked in redshirt freshman shortstop Mycal Jones on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning to tie the score at one. UNF poured it on the bottom of the third when Glanville's double drove in Olinto.

Dandridge was able to bring Glanville home with an RBI single up the middle. Martin finished the inning off with an RBI double up against the center field wall that allowed Dandridge to cross the plate, giving UNF a 4-1 lead. But the well dried up for the Ospreys at the plate, as UNF stranded four runners and collected just four hits from the fourth inning on.

The Ospreys will take the field again at 6 p.m. on Tuesday when they head to Tallahassee to take on the Florida State Seminoles. FSU entered this week ranked No. 1 but will most likely drop after an upset loss by UNF conference foe Jacksonville on Wednesday. The game will be broadcast live on WIOJ-AM 1010 in Jacksonville.
