NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of North Florida women's tennis team upended Atlantic Sun Conference foe Belmont 5-2 on Saturday afternoon to win its fourth consecutive match and pull within a game of second place in the A-Sun standings.
The Lady Ospreys (13-3, 7-2 A-Sun) completed their conference schedule with the win and need only a loss by cross-town rival Jacksonville in its final five matches to move into a second-place tie. UNF trails first-place ETSU - which also has five conference playing dates remaining - by two matches.
Against Belmont (6-4, 3-2 A-Sun), the Lady Ospreys took care of business early - taking a 1-0 lead after collecting the doubles point with wins in all three matches. The duo of Natalia Sanchez and Catalina Castillo knocked off Belmont's Tatiana Pozo and April Bradley, 8-2. UNF's Florencia Torres and Vanessa Sanchez then took care of Elizabeth Conyer and Katie Rhodes 8-1 at the No. 2 position, while Danielle Desmarais and Robin Rogers won 8-5 at the No. 3 position for the Lady Ospreys,
In singles play, Vanessa Sanchez won at the No. 2 position (6-1, 2-6, 6-2) over Conyer. Torres (7-5, 6-1 at No. 3), Natalia Sanchez (6-2, 6-3 at No. 4) and Rogers (7-5, 2-0, retired at No. 5) captured UNF's other singles victories.
The Lady Ospreys return home to face Troy on Tuesday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
