BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - After having its season-opening eight-match winning streak snapped on Sunday, the University of North Florida women's tennis team started what it hopes to be a new winning streak on Monday afternoon by upending Gardner-Webb 5-2 in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
The Lady Ospreys (9-1, 4-1 A-Sun) swept doubles play with relative ease and got singles wins from Catalina Castillo (6-2, 6-1 at No. 2), Florencia Torres (6-3, 6-2 at No. 3), Natalia Sanchez (6-2, 6-4 at No. 4) and Danielle Desmarais (6-3, 6-4 at No. 6) to wrap up the victory against the Bulldogs (2-7, 1-2 A-Sun) and help erase the bitter taste of a 7-0 loss to East Tennessee State on Sunday.
UNF's Vanessa Sanchez lost to Gardner-Webb's Laura Kriett, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 1 singles position, and Ina Durcakova fell to GWU's Amy Beavers, 6-4, 6- 0, at No. 5 singles for UNF's only setbacks of the afternoon.
Torres and Durcakova continued their excellence in doubles play, winning 8-5 at the No. 2 position over GWU's Monica Walser and Jenny Gomez, to improve to 8-0 as partners this spring.
The Lady Ospreys return to action on Saturday at the UNF Tennis Complex when they square off against South Carolina State. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
