JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The University of North Florida women's tennis team had its eight-game, season-opening winning streak snapped on Sunday in a 7-0 loss to defending Atlantic Sun Conference champion East Tennessee State.
After losing a hard-fought doubles point by dropping two of three matches, UNF (8-1, 3-1 A-Sun) didn't find much luck in singles play. ETSU (4-6, 1-0 A-Sun) swept all six singles matches, with only UNF's Ina Durcakova taking her match to three sets in falling to ETSU's Elena Volobueva (2-6, 6-2, 6-4).
Florencia Torres and Durcakova remained undefeated in doubles play, improving to 7-0 overall in dual play with an 8-7 (7-3) win over Tara Byrne and Vita Moskaliova at the No. 3 position. The Lady Ospreys weren't able to capture another doubles victory, however.
The Lady Ospreys' eight wins to open the season tied the 1998 squad for the best start in school history.
UNF returns to action on Monday at Gardner-Webb. Match time is set for 12:30 p.m.
