GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida golf team closed the Gator Invitational with a team score of 287 on Sunday, finishing the event in ninth place.
UNF finished with a three-round total of 872 and tied for the second best final round score of the tournament. Michael O'Neal led all UNF individuals, recording his second top 10 of the season, finishing tied for seventh after shooting a final round 73.
"Michael O'Neal played hard today and helped the team prove it could play with anyone," UNF head coach Scott Schroeder said. "We didn't finish the way we had hoped, but hopefully this helped prepare us for the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational next week."
The Ospreys had a chance to jump up even further in the final standings, but finished a combined 5-over on the final two holes.
J.C. Horne led the way for UNF, shooting an even par 70 to finish tied for 40th. Horne recorded five birdies on the day including four in a row on holes 10 through 13. Michael Giammaresi followed him with a 71, while Jeff Dennis shot a 73 to finish in a tie for 30th. Gavin Cambre rounded out the play for UNF with a 75.
Florida's Manuel Villegas ran away with the individual title by six strokes, finishing 6-under par, nine strokes ahead of O'Neal. He also helped Florida secure the team title, as the Gators fired a team total of 281 in the final round to win the event by 11 strokes.
The Ospreys are back in action next Sunday at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach when they host the John Hayt Collegiate Championship.
