JACKSONVILLE, Fla.  - The University of North Florida men's tennis team completed a 48-hour murderer's row on Saturday afternoon by splitting a pair of matches.

After opening the season 0-4 against a stacked lineup of opponents - including three foes ranked in the top 40 nationally - the Ospreys capped off their whirlwind weekend with a 4-1 win over Georgia Southern and a 4-2 loss to Florida A&M at the UNF Tennis Complex on Saturday. On Friday, the Ospreys got past cross-town rival Jacksonville University 4-3.

The Ospreys battled through the absence of No. 1 singles player Matias Sigal and regular No. 4 player Elad Gabay, who were injured and unavailable for Saturday's matches.

"We knew by not having our starting lineup it was going to be a tough afternoon for us," UNF assistant coach Rodrigo Puebla said. "However, the rest of the guys brought their best and competed extremely well. Our players are finally finding their best level on the court, and the matches today are going to be a great motivation going into Tuesday's match against Stetson."

Against Georgia Southern (1-4), the Ospreys (2-5) fell behind 1-0 after losing the doubles point. UNF captured a win at No. 1 doubles when Leonardo Gomes and Javier Ferrin upended Emmanuel Nkouleleue and Borja Malet, 8-4, but the Eagles rallied for wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the early advantage.

In singles play, UNF put the match away, getting straight-set victories from Javier Ferrin at the No. 2 position over Joris De Weerdt (7-6, 6-4), Ben Smith at No. 3 over Mattew Sands (6-4, 6-2), Leonardo Gomes at No. 4 (6-3, 6-4) over Greg Bekkers and Glen Marshall at No. 5 (6-3, 6-4) over Neil Shine. The No. 1 and No. 5 matches were vacated with the Ospreys leading.

UNF started slow against FAMU (1-2) as well, being swept in doubles to fall into an early hole. The Ospreys got wins at No. 3 singles from Smith, who upended William Mau-asam 6-4, 7-5, and from Marshall at the No. 6 spot when he defeated Paul Paige 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.

UNF's Yuiti Lopes lost in three sets to Simbarashe Happy at No. 3 singles (4-6, 6-3, 6-2), however, and Eduardo Pereira and Andres Monje lost at the No. 1 and No. 5 positions, respectively, to round out the match.

UNF will play return to action on Tuesday when it faces Atlantic Sun Conference foe Stetson in DeLand. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
