First-place Eagles sweep UNF

Lady Ospreys hit season-low -.052

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's volleyball team fell 3-0 (30-14, 30-14, 30-18) to Atlantic Sun Conference first-place team Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday night.

UNF (4-20, 1-8 A-Sun) hit a season-low -.052 and committed 25 errors, while FGCU (19-2, 7-1) posted a .346 hitting percentage. Junior Bary Rasmussen recorded a team-high six kills, and freshman Madeline Belvin notched 17 assists.

The Eagles used a 10-4 run in game one to take a 21-10 lead and put UNF on the defensive. FGCU kept the pressure on and allowed just four UNF points the rest of the way as part of a 9-4 run to go up 1-0 in the match.

Both senior Claire Yonutas and freshman Marshay Greenlee led UNF with two kills in the first game. It was the only game of the night in which the Lady Ospreys had a positive hitting percentage.

FGCU got off to a quick start in game two and took a 10-3 lead. The Lady Ospreys tried to stay in it by going on a 4-1 run that was highlighted by a kill and ace from Rasmussen to pull to within 20-10. But the Eagles responded with a 10-4 run to claim the 2-0 match lead.

UNF had the advantage over the last 13 points of game three, outscoring FGCU 8-5, but it was too little too late. The Eagles jumped out to a 25-9 lead to effectively wrap up the match.

Senior Maegan Weisert led UNF on defense with 11 digs. Both Yonutas and freshman Chelsea Rabe finished with two aces.

The Lady Ospreys will return to action at 7 p.m. on Thursday against cross-town rival Jacksonville. The match will played at JU's Swisher Gymnasium and will be one of two opportunities this season for UNF to grab a point in the SunTrust River City Rumble. It will be aired live on ASun.TV.
