JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Both
Maegan Weisert and
Claire Yonutas recorded a double-double, but it was not enough for the University of North Florida women's volleyball team to suppress the strong attack of Florida A&M in a 3-0 loss on Wednesday night at UNF Arena.
Weisert recorded her fifth double-double of the season and 38th of her career with 11 kills and 19 digs. It was the fifth time this season Yonutas notched double-figures in kills and digs, tallying 12 kills and 12 digs to go along with a .370 hitting percentage. FAMU outhit UNF .247 to .143, while the Lady Ospreys committed 12 service errors.
UNF (4-19) trailed by as many as seven in game one but made a valiant charge at the end. Down 27-22, the Lady Ospreys went on a 5-1 run that was highlighted by two kills from freshman
Kaley Read and cut FAMU's lead to 28-27. But two straight kills by FAMU's Jovana Blazeski helped the Rattlers go up 1-0 in the match.
Game two was a different story for the Lady Ospreys. UNF fell behind early and wasn't able to counter FAMU, which hit .433 in the game. Yonutas hit .500 in game two and combined for seven kills with Weisert.
The Lady Ospreys didn't show any signs of laying down just yet and battled hard in the third game. After falling behind by five, UNF came back to cut the Rattlers lead to 13-10 on a Weisert kill. FAMU extended its lead, but Read was able to bring UNF back to within three when she spiked a Madeline Belvin set with authority, making the score 19-16 in favor of the Rattlers.
However, FAMU (7-5) was able to find a weakness in the UNF defense and used an 11-6 run to close out the match. The Lady Ospreys only trailed the Rattlers .233 to 265 in hitting percentage for the game, but UNF's five service errors silenced its rally.
The Rattlers were led by Blazeski's 25 kills and Zaira Manzo's 41 assists. Read finished with eight kills for the Lady Ospreys. Freshman
Tara Gilbreath recorded a season-high 11 digs.
UNF will return to action at 7 p.m. on Saturday when it heads to Fort Myers, Fla., to take on Florida Gulf Coast in an Atlantic Sun Conference showdown.
