WINTER PARK, Fla. - The North Florida women's tennis team won for the ninth time in 10 matches and defeated its second ranked opponent of the season on Tuesday in a 5-2 victory over Rollins College.
The Tars (10-8), who are ranked 14th in the latest Division II poll, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the match by sweeping through doubles play and winning at all three positions. The Lady Ospreys (13-6) rallied big in singles play, however, winning five of the six matches to take the team victory.
The Lady Ospreys' biggest win came from Catalina Castillo at the No. 2 singles position when she upended Rollins' Marnie Mahler, who is ranked 35th nationally. UNF also got victories from Florencia Torres (No. 3), Katja Brandt (No. 4), Lauren Cockbill (No. 5) and Robin Rogers (No. 6) - all in straight sets. The Tars' only victory came at the No. 1 position when 24th-ranked Tasi Purcell battled from behind to knock off UNF's Vanessa Sanchez, 4-6, 6- 4, 7-5.
UNF is 2-2 this season against ranked foes, having also defeated Valdosta State.
The Lady Ospreys return to action on Friday when they face Bethune-Cookman at the UNF Tennis Complex in their final home match of the season. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
