MARIETTA, Ga. (April 29, 2006) - The University of North Florida softball team dropped a pair of one-run games in a non-conference doubleheader at Kennesaw State University on Saturday, falling 1-0 and 4-3 in eight innings.
Kennesaw State (38-17) plated late runs in both contests to snap the four-game winning streak UNF (28-25) had built coming into the contest.
KSU's Brittany Matthews captured a win in both games for KSU, while Gwen Williams led the Lady Ospreys with three hits.
After neither team collected a hit for the first three innings of the opener, Williams finally reached on a one-out double in the top of the fourth.
Kennesaw State collected its first hit in the bottom of the fourth when Keri McKee led off the inning with a double. The Lady Owls, however, failed to score in the frame when McKee was thrown out at the plate on a suicide squeeze attempt.
KSU finally cashed in with a run in the eighth inning. Kelley Cowart squirted a two-out single underneath the glove of Jessica Sexton before Jen Hunt tripled her home to give the Lady Owls a 1-0 advantage.
UNF put together its best opportunity in the top of the seventh inning when Williams and Caitlin Miller both reached on singles then moved to third after an Alisha Phillips groundout. Matthews (18-4), however, retired Lauren Pulling to end the game.
Tori Ahern (9-10) was the tough-luck loser for the Lady Ospreys, allowing only four hits, while striking out six.
Ashley Parenteau went 0-for-3 in the loss and saw her 11-game hitting streak come to an end.
The Lady Ospreys jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the nightcap, taking advantage of a couple of Kennesaw State errors. Parenteau reached on a two-out error to start the rally then moved to second on a Caitlin Miller base hit. KSU looked to be out of the inning on a Phillips pop up, until Lady Owl shortstop Amanda Malcolm dropped the ball, allowing Parenteau to score.
Kennesaw took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when April Keasler drove home a pair of runs with a two-out single.
The Lady Ospreys countered with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth when Phillips and Pulling each drove home runs with RBI singles.
Keasler came through again for the Lady Owls with a two-out RBI in the bottom of the sixth tying the game 3-3 with an RBI single before UNF committed two errors in the bottom of the eighth leading to Kennesaw's 4-3 victory.
Pulling led UNF with a career best three hits in the nightcap.
Kelli Pitts (9-6) suffered the loss, allowing four runs - three earned - on six hits, while striking out four.
The Lady Ospreys return to action on Monday when they travel to Florida Atlantic for a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m.
