BUIES CREEK, N.C. (April 13, 2006) - The
University of North Florida softball team dropped both
ends of a doubleheader at Campbell on Thursday,
giving up single runs in the bottom of the seventh
inning to leave Buies Creek 0-2.
Jessica Huffman singled with two outs and a runner
on third to drive home the winning run and give the
Fighting Camels a 1-0 victory in the opener before
Holly Harris smashed a walk-off home run to right in
the nightcap to give Campbell a 3-2 win.
Huffman was a thorn in the side of the Lady Osprey
pitching staff all day, reaching base four times in the
two games, while scoring a run and driving home one.
Harris was equally devastating in game two, finishing
3-for-4 with a pair of runs.
Ashley Parenteau led the Lady Osprey offense with
three hits, extending her hitting streak to five games.
Caitlin Miller also had a base hit in both games, while
Gwen Williams accounted for UNF's only RBI in the
doubleheader.
Tori Ahern (7-9) and Lauren Caviness (14-12) battled
each other in the opener for seven innings until
Jessica Huffman finally ended the game in the bottom
of the seventh with a single to left field that
bounced off the glove of Miller. Stephenie Pappas
scored on the play for the only run of the game.
Ahern did not allow a hit through the first five innings
of play and worked out a jam in the second inning of
play that saw the Fighting Camels load the bases on
one out without the benefit of a hit.
With the exception of Parenteau, the UNF offense
never had an answer for Caviness. Parenteau
collected a pair of hits that contributed to two UNF
rallies in the fourth and sixth innings of play.
Parenteau reached on a one out single in the fourth,
then moved up to second when Miller singled to right,
but was stranded there to end the inning.
UNF's best chance to score came in the sixth when
Kelli Rutenbar led off the inning with a walk, moved
to second on a Christina Evans sacrifice bunt then
went to third on Parenteau's second hit of the game.
Caviness stranded both runners again to help her
earn the win.
"We had our chances, but just couldn't get the big
hit," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "I thought
both of our pitchers pitched well today."
Campbell didn't wait long in the second game to jump
on the board, scoring a pair of runs in the third
inning. Huffman scored the first run after leading off
the inning with a walk and eventually scoring on a
Williams fielding error. Holly Harris scored the second
run of the inning on a Krysten Vlacancich sacrifice fly
to left.
UNF scored its first runs of the afternoon in the top
of the fourth, taking advantage of a pair of Campbell
errors. Williams helped make up for her error in the
fourth, driving home the second UNF run after she
chopped a ball up the middle for a base hit.
Kelly Weaver (13-6) did not allow an earned run in
the nightcap, while Brosky (8-7) gave up four hits
and walked four in the loss.
UNF's road trip through North Carolina continues on
Saturday when the Lady Ospreys travel to Gardner-
Webb for a doubleheader.
