STATESBORO, Ga. - The University of North Florida men's and women's tennis teams capped a two-match road swing with impressive victories over Georgia Southern on Saturday afternoon. Both squads upended the Eagles, 5-2, to improve to 2-2 overall this season.
The UNF teams opened the road trip with losses at South Alabama on Friday. In Mobile, the UNF women lost to the 30th-ranked Lady Jaguars 5- 2, while the men fell 5-1 to the 63rd-ranked USA men's squad.
"We have talked about relaxing and starting to have more of a good time while we are on the courts," UNF head coach Igal Buberman said. "I think we saw some of that (at Georgia Southern). Everyone has been putting a lot of pressure on themselves to perform because of this being our first season in Division I. We just need to relax and focus on finding our game. I thought we did that (on Saturday). It is definitely good to come home with two wins."
Against Georgia Southern, the UNF men swept the doubles competition for their first point and then captured all but two singles positions - getting victories from Eduardo Pereira at the No. 1 spot, Jose Terrera at No. 3, Elad Gabay at No. 5 and Leonardo Gomes at No. 6.
On Friday, Terrera grabbed the Ospreys' only victory at the No. 4 singles position, upending South Alabama's R.J. Nagel in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 1- 0) in a match that was shortened due to time constraints. The teams did not play doubles.
The UNF women, meanwhile, gave a strong effort against South Alabama - their first ranked opponent of the season - but couldn't come away with the win. Catalina Castillo defeated South Alabama's Sylvanie Spanenberg (7-6, 6-4) at No. 5 singles, while Robin Rogers took out USA's Marion Lehmann (6-1, 6-2) at No. 6 singles.
The UNF women's squad will be back in action on Feb. 7 when it travels to face UCF in Orlando, while the UNF men play again on Feb. 11 against Florida A&M at the UNF Tennis Complex.
