AUBURN, Ala.  - The North Florida men's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2006 season on Sunday afternoon, 6-1 at 29th-ranked Auburn.

The Ospreys captured their only point at the No. 4 singles position, where UNF's Jose Terrera upended Auburn's Milan Krjnetin, 6-3, 6-1.

The Ospreys (1-1) lost the doubles point after dropping all three matches - starting with the Tigers' ranked nationally tandem (#16) of Alex Schweizer and Terence Nugnet, who upended UNF's Matias Sigal and Terrera, 8-3. UNF's Eduardo Pereira and Elad Gabay narrowly fell to Auburn's Dilaj and Milan Krjnetin in the No. 3 doubles matchup, 8-6.

In singles, aside from Terrera's victory, the Ospreys put up their toughest fight at the No. 2 position, where Sigal fell to Robbert Lathouwers in a third-set tie-breaker after splitting the first two sets, 5-7, 6-3. Pereira lost at the No. 1 position to Schweizer, who is ranked 94th nationally.

The match was Auburn's season opener.

"It was a tough match for our guys against one of the top-ranked teams in the country," UNF head coach Igal Buberman said. "I thought we really competed at the top four positions in singles. Having the doubles point would have helped us. We started off really well in singles, but we couldn't keep it going. This is a wake-up call for all of us. It shows us that we need to keep working hard."

The Ospreys will return to action on Feb. 3 when they begin a two-match road swing at South Alabama and then travel to Georgia Southern on Feb. 4.
