JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's tennis team got its 2006 season and the program's Division I era off to a solid start on Friday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex, upending Florida A&M 6-1 in the season opener for both teams.

The Lady Ospreys easily took the doubles point and then got singles victories from Vanessa Sanchez, Lauren Cockbill, Catalina Castillo and Robin Rogers against the short-handed Rattlers, who played with just five players.

"I was proud of our girls," first-year UNF head coach Igal Buberman said after the Lady Ospreys gave him his first career victory as a college coach. "It was good to get the season started and work in match play against an opponent other than ourselves. This was a good test for our players and will help us prepare for a much tougher opponent on Sunday."

The Lady Ospreys will face Southeastern Conference foe Auburn at the UNF Tennis Complex on Sunday at 3 p.m.

FAMU's Zamambo Mkhize posted the Rattlers' only win, defeating UNF's Katja Brandt 6-1, 4-6, (10-7) at the No. 1 singles position. Vanessa Sanchez was the only other Lady Osprey to lose a game - defeating FAMU's Samaria Bailey 6-1, 6-0.
