JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 9, 2005) - The University of North Florida men's and women's tennis teams opened their home schedules on Wednesday by each defeating Flagler College 9-0. The win improves the No. 3 ranked men's team to 2-0 for the season, as the No. 7 ranked women opened their season with the win.
The Lady Ospreys jumped out quickly taking the doubles matches, 8-2, 8-0 and 8-1. In singles, all six positions were able to win in straight sets.
"Everybody was relaxed and ready to go," head coach Tom Schrader said. "We have been waiting along time to get the season started. I was very pleased with how the girls performed."
The men, fresh off a 9-0 victory versus Division I Florida Atlantic, picked up where they left off. As was the case in their opener, North Florida lost just one set en route to the victory.
"I think our guys took Flagler a bit lightly, they were stronger than we may have anticipated," Schrader said. "Any time you can sweep doubles, it helps to relax the team, and allows them to play with more confidence."
The Ospreys will now prepare to take on Lynn, who should provide a great test early in the season. The Lynn women will enter the match with a No. 3 ranking in the nation, as the men come in ranked No. 16.
"Our women's team will face a great challenge playing Lynn," Schrader said. "This will show us just where we stand against one of the top teams in the nation. It should be a great battle."
The men's team will have to be on its heals, as LU will give UNF its first match against another ranked opponent.
"Their men's team is very dangerous," Schrader said. "Any time a team that is ranked behind you comes in, you know that they are going to be at the top of their game. I feel that we are prepared for the tough competition."
UNF will face off against Lynn on Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. at UNF.
