Men's tennis begins season with sweep

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 1, 2005) - The University of North Florida men's tennis team began its 2005 season by defeating Division I Florida Atlantic on Tuesday. UNF dropped just one set en route to a 7-0 win.

"The guys played well above expectations today," head coach Tom Schrader said. "I was surprised that we were able to win the match 7-0."

In doubles, North Florida's No. 15 nationally ranked team of German Escallon and Leonardo Gomes defeated the team of Magris/Schofield 8-5. That was followed by an 8-1 win for the team of Jose Terrera and Sheldon Simpson. Finally Eduardo Pereira and Elad Gabay claimed an 8-2 win to sweep doubles.

Singles was more of the same, with only Escallon failing to win in straight sets. His match with J.P. Bounassar went three. No. 10 Terrera, No. 26 Gomes, Pereira, de Polignac and Simpson were victorious.

"The team played very well. Honestly, I didn't think they would rise up to the level they played at to day," Schrader said.

UNF will next be in action on Feb. 9 when both the men and women's teams host Flagler at 2:30 p.m.
