JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida volleyball team enjoyed another strong hitting performance, getting double figures in kills from three players while hitting .270, to breeze past Division II powerhouse Florida Gulf Coast 3-0 on Friday night at UNF Arena (30-23, 30-28, 30-22).
The win was UNF's 15th in its last 18 matches and its fourth straight overall. The Lady Ospreys (18-9) got 15 kills from Amy Stroder and 11 from Magen Wood. Jennifer King recorded her eighth double-double of the season - and second her straight - for UNF with 11 kills and 13 digs.
"We played well against a good team," UNF head coach Bryan Bunn said. "The girls were ready because they knew this would be a challenge. (FGCU) has a solid team. We just put everything together."
Florida Gulf Coast (25-3) is ranked 25th in the latest Division II poll and had won 16 consecutive matches coming into Friday night. FGCU hit .138 but had 22 errors to aid in its demise. UNF upended the Eagles 3- 1 in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional semifinals last season in the first meeting between the teams.
UNF took control in the opening game on Friday, overcoming a brief deficit with a 7-0 rally, to move ahead 9-4 and cruise to the finish. The Lady Ospreys hit .312 with only four errors and got five kills from Wood in taking a 1-0 lead.
In game two, UNF never trailed but couldn't shake the pesky Eagles. Florida Gulf Coast sliced a 27-21 deficit to 29-28 before Wood finished things off with her second kill of the game. King tallied seven kills, helping push the Lady Ospreys ahead 2-0.
UNF wasted no time in putting the pressure on in game three as well, racing out to an 18-4 advantage. Florida Gulf Coast battled back but could never get closer than 28-20. Kills by King and Emily Kohler gave UNF its final two points from there to put the match away.
Ericka Fonseca led Florida Gulf Coast with 16 kills, hitting .387. Laura Manovill led the Eagles with 20 assists. Heather Kendrick led UNF with 42 assists, while Jenna Thomas had 22 digs to lead four Lady Ospreys with double figures.
UNF closes its home season on Saturday afternoon on "Senior Day" against Stetson. Match time is set for 3 p.m. at UNF Arena.
