JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida volleyball team erased the bad memories from its first meeting of the season with cross-town rival Jacksonville by walloping the Dolphins 3-0 in the rematch at UNF Arena on Wednesday night.
Amy Stroder enjoyed her best performance of the year, collecting 14 kills and hitting .367, to lead the Lady Ospreys (10-8) to their third win in the last four matches against JU. As a team, UNF hit .319 with only 13 errors, while Jacksonville hit.194 and tallied just one block. The Dolphins (7-11) tallied 10 blocks in the first meeting between the teams on Sept. 29, a 3-1 win by JU.
"We really played well," UNF head coach Bryan Bunn said. "We wanted to minimize our hitting errors, and we did that tonight. We jumped well and played one of our best matches of the year. It is always good to win."
Sophomore outside hitter Jennifer King didn't play against the Dolphins in the first meeting but helped make up for lost time on Wednesday, finishing with 12 kills in 22 attempts - and a .409 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Heather Kendrick directed the UNF attack, finishing with 38 assists.
Eva Stoilova led the Dolphins with her 11th double-double of the season, piling up 14 kills and 15 digs. Petya Borisova added 11 kills, while Erin Donivan dished out 33 assists.
The Dolphins dropped game one to North Florida, 30- 24. UNF rallied from a 22-19 deficit by outscoring JU 10-1 to win the game. UNF kept the momentum going in game two, taking the game, 30-21. After the two teams were tied at five, UNF rattled off 10 of the next 15 points to take a 15-10 lead that it never lost.
Game three went back and forth, with UNF taking an early 12-9 lead after three straight points after JU had tied the game at nine. The Dolphins came back to take an 18-16 lead, but UNF erased that deficit with a quick six-point flurry and never trailed again.
UNF jumps back into conference play on Friday when it plays host to East Tennessee State at 7 p.m.
