JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Head coach Smoke Laval and the University of North Florida officially announced the 2012 baseball schedule. The 56-game regular season includes 27 games at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium, highlighted by a game against national runner-up Florida.
North Florida will play 20 games against teams that competed in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, including a pair of games against the national runner-up Florida.
“I feel like we have put together a challenging schedule this season,” Laval stated. “We have a good balance of games at home and games on the road this season. We play 20 games against teams that played in NCAA Regionals last season. I think this will be a fun season.”
The Ospreys open up the 2012 campaign with a three-game set against Southern Illinois. The season-opener for North Florida is slated for Friday, Feb. 17. UNF continues the weekend with a single game on Saturday, Feb. 18 and Sunday, Feb. 19.
Following the opening weekend at home, North Florida plays seven of its next nine games on the road.
The Ospreys travel to Tampa for a midweek tilt against USF on Wednesday, Feb. 22, before traveling to Jacksonville, Ala. for a weekend series against Jacksonville State (Feb. 24-26). UNF plays host to Georgia Southern on Thursday, Mar. 1 and Friday Mar. 2, before concluding the weekend against the Eagles in Statesboro, Ga. (Mar. 3-4). After the GSU series, the Ospreys will head to Tallahassee for a single game against Florida A&M (Mar. 6).
North Florida returns home for a three-game nonconference series with the South Alabama. The Ospreys welcome the Jaguars into Harmon Stadium on Friday, Mar. 9 through Sunday, Mar. 11.
UNF journeys down to Miami for a pair of midweek games with FIU (Mar. 13-14) before opening up Atlantic Sun Conference play on the road against Florida Gulf Coast (Mar. 16-18).
After opening up ASun play, the Ospreys continue the season with six consecutive home games. North Florida takes on Savannah State (Mar. 20) and Bethune-Cookman (Mar. 21) in a pair of midweek contests before the Atlantic Sun home opener against USC Upstate (Mar. 23-25). UNF wraps up the homestand with a midweek game against Florida A&M (Mar. 27) before playing seven of its next eight games on the road.
The Ospreys open up the set of games with a midweek game in Daytona Beach against Bethune-Cookman (Mar. 28). Over the weekend, North Florida travels to Georgia for a three-game conference swing against rival Kennesaw State (Mar. 30-Apr. 1). UNF returns home to Harmon Stadium for a midweek game against national runner-up Florida on Tuesday, Apr. 3. Following the home game with the Gators, the Ospreys head north to Tennessee for a three-game conference series with East Tennessee State (Apr. 5-7).
North Florida plays eight of its next nine games at home, beginning with a midweek game on Tuesday, Apr. 10 against Bethune-Cookman. The Ospreys host Lipscomb over the weekend of Apr. 13-15. During the midweek, UNF plays a home and home with Florida A&M beginning the two-game tilt in Jacksonville (Apr. 17) and concluding play in Tallahassee (Apr. 18). Following the game with the Rattlers, UNF hosts 2011 Atlantic Sun Regular Season Champion Stetson in a three-game series (Apr. 27-29).
Following the series with the Hatters, North Florida begins the final stretch of the season with nine of its next 10 games on the road. The Ospreys play the Citadel (May 1-2), Belmont (May 4-6), Mercer (May 11-13) and Florida (May 15) all on the road. The lone home game during that stretch comes on Wednesday, May 9 as the Ospreys take on the USF Bulls.
North Florida concludes the regular season against crosstown rival Jacksonville in the 2012 edition of the River City Rumble. All three games of the series will be at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium beginning on Thursday, May 17 and ending on Saturday, May 19.
The Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament will be held in DeLand, Fla. on the campus of Stetson University. The tournament is slated for Wednesday, May 23 through Saturday, May 26.
