Ian Gibson, a North Florida basketball alum, rejoined Matthew Driscoll's staff in July of 2017 as the Director of Basketball Operations. Gibson originally served in that role for the Ospreys from 2012-14.
Following his first stint with his alma mater, Gibson spent three seasons as an assistant coach for the men's basketball program at Daytona State College. During his tenure, the Falcons compiled 71 victories and claimed three Mid-Florida Conference championships. DSC finished Top 4 in the state twice during his tenure and developed players that continued their collegiate careers at UCF, Lamar, Bowling Green, North Carolina Central, Longwood, Embry Riddle and Wingate.
During the 2016-17 season, Gibson was ranked 22nd among Florida JUCO assistant coaches (CoachStat.net), He helped mentor a pair of second-team JUCO All-Americans, two Mid-Florida Players of the Year and 15 all-conference honorees during his time at Daytona State.
A four-year letterwinner at North Florida from 2005-09, Gibson joined the UNF staff for the first time after working as the assistant strength coach at the University of South Carolina (2011-12). He also was a graduate assistant coach at VCU during the Rams Final Four run in during the 2011 NCAA Tournament. In his role with the Ospreys, Gibson will assist with various administrative duties with primary oversight of the team’s academic development.
A guard for the Ospreys, Gibson battled injuries throughout his UNF playing career. When healthy, he was one of the team’s top defensive performers even leading the team and ranking eighth in the Atlantic Sun for steals during his sophomore campaign with 46 (1.6 spg). Gibson also excelled in the classroom garnering A-Sun All-Academic recognition in 2007-08.
Gibson earned his degree in criminal justice from North Florida in 2009 and began his coaching career as an assistant varsity coach at Monsignor Pace High School, his prep alma mater.
A native of Miami, Gibson was a standout prep player at Monsignor Pace, earning all-district honors and helping lead his squad to the 2003 3A state title (31-5) and the state semifinals in 2004 (29-6).
Gibson is married to the former Brittany Burton, a UNF women's basketball player in 2007-08.
