UNF Responsibilities: The National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) mandates that each member institution have a Faculty Athletics Representative
(FAR), appointed by the institution[apos]s president. Typically the FAR is a regular
member of the institution[apos]s faculty, with primarily teaching and research responsibilities.
The FAR[apos]s primary responsibility is to represent the institution[apos]s academic
interests to the NCAA and to act as an advisor to the institution[apos]s president
and director of athletics (AD) with regard to intercollegiate athletics matters.
The FAR also serves on the management council of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Primary among a FAR[apos]s concerns are student/athlete welfare, institutional control
over all aspects of intercollegiate athletics, and the academic and athletic
integrity of its intercollegiate athletics programs.
Academic Experience: Received her B.A. with honors in economics
from Randolph-Macon Woman[apos]s College in 1979 and her Ph.D. in economics from
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1985 ... has received the
University[apos]s Outstanding Teacher Award and two TIP awards for excellence in
undergraduate teaching ... has published several scholarly papers and a book
on the economic consequences of state lotteries ... is currently engaged in
a research project that examines the consequences of using Florida Comprehensive
Assessment Test (FCAT) scores to evaluate school effectiveness ... in addition
to her teaching and research duties, Dr. Borg has been the Director of the Undergraduate
Academic Enrichment Program at UNF since 1995. In this capacity, she directs
the Undergraduate Research Program and helps talented UNF students prepare for
prestigious national scholarship competitions such as the Rhodes, Marshall,
and Truman scholarships. UNF has been very successful in these competitions
in recent years, achieving three Truman Scholars, a USA Today Academic
First Team Member, 12 Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholars, four Phi
Kappa Phi Graduate Fellows and five Rhodes Scholarship State Finalists in the
last few years ... Dr. Borg has been involved in the community as a guest speaker
for numerous civic organizations and the media on economic and public policy
topics ... in addition, she served on the Health and Human Services Board, a
citizen[apos]s advisory board to the District Four Department of Children and Families,
the Healthy Start Coalition, and the WAGES Coalition from 1993-2000.
Personal: Is a native of Little Rock, Ark. ... married to
Jacksonville native Rody Borg, professor of economics at Jacksonville University
... couple have three daughters, Rebecca, Kellie and Christina.
