DELAND, Fla. - UNF women's tennis (8-6, 0-1 ASUN) came up short in the first conference match of the year, dropping the league opener to the Stetson Hatters (11-5, 1-0 ASUN), 5-2, Friday afternoon.
The Ospreys secured the doubles point as
Kit Gulihur and
Ana Paula Melilo secured a 6-3 win at the top court. In a long battle,
Isabel Oliveira and
Kendall Nash clinched the doubles point for the Ospreys in a 7-5 win. The third court was left unfinished.
In singles play, Gulihur quickly took a 6-2, 6-1 win at the top court to give the Ospreys a 2-0 lead. However, UNF couldn't hold onto its lead as Melilo and Oliveira were both defeated in two sets. At a tie score, the Hatters continued their push as
Megan Forster fell in three sets. Noa Cohen clinched the win for Stetson in a three-set victory over Nash. With one point remaining, the Hatters took a 5-2 win by securing a 7-6, 7-6 victory on the final court.
The Ospreys return back to Jacksonville to host Austin Peay in the ASUN home opener 10 a.m. Sunday, March 19 at the UNF Tennis Complex.
