Baseball Doubled Up in Midweek Tilt at FAMU

Ospreys Homer Three Times, But Strand Ten

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - North Florida baseball went for its third-straight multi-home run game, belting a trio of roundtrippers, but FAMU (3-6) bested the Ospreys in that department as UNF was out-slugged, 12-6, in an unseasonably hot afternoon on the final day of February.

UNF posted 12 hits but stranded 10 runners as the Ospreys (4-5) fell in their first road game of the season. Aidan Sweatt, Gabriel Esquivel and Jakob Runnels all homered, expanding UNF's team-home run total to 18 for the year.

Behind the Line Score
  • Aidan Sweatt teed off on the payoff pitch for a leadoff home run to left field in the top of the first, his second home run of the season and fifth of his career
  • FAMU quickly got even in the second after a leadoff walk was followed by a Joe Pierini RBI double. The damage continued on a two-run home run to left center one batter later.
  • UNF tied it up, 3-3, in the third. Drew Leinenbach singled up the middle, Sweatt doubled down the line and Austin Brinling scored Leinenbach with a single. Cherokee NIchols sent one deep enough into right field for the sac fly.
  • FAMU jumped in front again after a single was followed by a one-out double in the third.
  • The Rattlers posted a four-run fourth with the help of back-to-back home runs, a double and a single
  • FAMU got the leadoff runner to second off an error in the sixth, but Ty Angevine retired the next three batters to strand an insurance run
  • Dallen Leach opened the seventh with a single, but FAMU would work out of it with a groundout and two punchouts
  • FAMU pushed an unearned run across in the seventh to expand its lead to 9-3
  • Esquivel launched a 3-2 delivery to left for a solo shot in the eighth, giving UNF some late life. Cade Reich worked a walk and Leach singled, but FAMU got out of the jam with a groundout
  • FAMU answered with its own solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, Ty Hanchey's second of the game. The Rattlers followed with a two-run home run two batters later, giving them a 12-4 lead
  • Sweatt got the third piece of the cycle with a single in the ninth, setting up Runnels' two-run bomb, cutting the deficit to 12-6. FAMU got two more fly outs to end it.
