Baseball Caps 2022 Season With 9-3 Win Against JU

Ospreys Can’t Advance in Pool Play Despite Victory

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Five Ospreys had multi-hit games, Justin Holmes and Abraham Sequera launched towering home runs and Jason Gonzalez turned in a quality start as UNF baseball upended Jacksonville, 9-3, in one of North Florida's most complete wins on the year.

Unfortunate for UNF (22-33) and odd for the occasion, despite Wednesday's win, North Florida's season comes to a close as UNF is not able to advance from ASUN Championship Pool B play.

After dropping Tuesday's game to Eastern Kentucky, EKU won again today, giving the Colonels at worst a 2-1 pool play record while also holding the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Ospreys with one game remaining in the pool play schedule. EKU will be the lone team in Pool B to advance to the semifinals round.

Subsequently, UNF will not play its game against Jacksonville State that was previously slated for Thursday, May 26.

As for the win, UNF jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first and never looked back, holding off JU (27-27) thanks to a 13-hit and six extra-base hit effort. Gonzalez scattered nine JU singles, fanning five while not permitting an extra-base hit or walk in his 100-pitch effort.

Max McKinley secured the UNF win with 2.1 innings of hitless baseball, fanning one while walking just one.

Behind the Line Score

  • Cade Westbrook plated another on a sac fly and Aidan Sweatt clubbed an RBI double to left center.
  • Justin Holmes hit his second home run in three games against JU with a massive home run over the green monster in left center, giving UNF a 4-0 lead.
  • The top of the third featured Sweatt's 70th hit of the year, a single. He stole second and scored on Caleb Stafford's RBI single to right center.
  • A pair of singles, including one landing on the left field line near the jutting out wall in foul territory, gave JU one run in the third.
  • UNF's lead continued to expand in the fourth inning. A great at-bat allowed Holmes to walk before Byars drew his own free pass. Edge banged one off the green monster, scoring Holmes as Byars eventually came around on a wild pitch.
  • JU plated a pair of runs in the seventh inning, scoring two on a flared single to right. Westbrook made a strong throw to Sequera on the single as Sequera picked it and made the tag at third base to quiet the threat.
  • The hot-hitting bats of Holmes and Byars added to UNF's lead in the eighth. Holmes doubled to right and Byars singled him home, splitting the right center gap again.
  • Sequera capped off his collegiate career with a towering solo home run to center, adding another run.
  • Max McKinley prevented JU from mounting a comeback, holding JU hitless for 2.1 innings.
