Baseball Drops Series Opener to FGCU

Late Innings Loom Large on Muggy Thursday Night, Byars Notches Four Hits

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - With North Florida baseball and FGCU knotted up 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning on a warm Thursday night at Harmon Stadium, it was the Eagles' bats that heated up late as UNF dropped the series opener, 10-3, Thursday, May 19.

The Ospreys (20-31, 10-17 ASUN) were paced by Isaiah Byars' four-hit night, while Abraham Sequera and Brock Edge both tallied solo home runs despite the loss. Lefty Peter Holden twirled another solid start, going 5.2 innings while permitting only two earned runs.

Behind the Line Score
  • FGCU (33-20, 16-12 ASUN) did plate one in the third after a walk and a single, but Peter Holden rolled a big 4-6-3 GDP to prevent a bigger inning.
  • The Eagles made it 2-0 after Alejandro Figueredo doubled off the top of the left center wall, moved to third on a grounder and scored on Harrison Povey's RBI two-out single to right.
  • UNF got on the board in the fifth on the hot bat of Byars. Byars provided his third hit of the evening, a two-out RBI single to right center, plating Dallen Leach after the catcher singled earlier in the frame.
  • Justin Holmes tracked down a deep fly ball to center, stranding three runners in the sixth.
  • Sequera evened up the game one half inning later, sending a solo home run to right field as it bounced off the top of Povey's glove in right and into the tree line.
  • FGCU's Ian Farrow made it 4-2 in the seventh though, belting a two-run home run to right center.
  • Byars came up in another crucial part of the game and provided a bloop single just over FGCU first baseman Joe Kinker. But, with a good presence of mind, Kinker grabbed the ball on a hop and turned to throw home and get Grant Grodi as he tried to score from second base on the play.
  • The Eagles' power shone through as FGCU scored six in the eighth with the help of five hits including a trio of doubles and a two-run home run.
  • Edge got a hold of one in the eighth, lacing a solo home run over the wall in left to complete the scoring.
