Late Innings Separate Ospreys and Owls, Baseball Drops Saturday’s Game

Gonzalez Spins Strong 5.2-Inning Outing in His Starting Debut

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A pitcher's duel was in order again Saturday as North Florida baseball and Kennesaw State were tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth, but the Owls (26-17, 14-6 ASUN) pulled ahead late as UNF dropped an 8-2 contest to KSU April 30 from Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys and Owls will meet for the rubber game tomorrow at 1:05 p.m.

Despite leading the team in appearances with 16 prior to this series, righty Jason Gonzalez took advantage of his first start of the season, spinning 5.2 innings of two-run ball. The hurler retired as many as thirteen-straight batters, taking the no-decision.

The Owls were the first to score, plating a pair in the sixth before Abraham Sequera tied the game with a two-run blast off the batting facility in left field.

KSU's six runs over the final two innings proved to be the difference as the pitchers of record were decided in relief.

Behind the Line Score
  • KSU threatened, getting the first two runners on in the first. With runners in motion, Jason Gonzalez induced a huge 5-3 double play on a fortuitous chopper to Sequera at third base. Gonzalez coaxed a popout to retire the side.
  • UNF (17-26, 7-13 ASUN) also put runners on in the first, with Brock Edge and Cade Westbrook singling. Aidan Sweatt nearly scored them with a liner, but it was snagged by KSU's Cash Young at third.
  • KSU generated a pair of two-out hits in the fifth, but Gonzalez buckled down to get a swinging strikeout.
  • The Owls finally got on the board in the sixth. With two outs, Young doubled down the left field line and Donovan Cash reached on an infield single, moving Young to third. On a 3-0 pitch, a fastball skipped in the dirt and to the backstop, scoring Young.
  • KSU made it 2-0 after a two-out single into right center in the sixth.
  • Sequera took advantage of a high breaking ball by belting a two-run home run off the batting facility in left, tying the game 2-2 in the sixth.
  • A fielding miscue, productive flyout and a wild pitch allowed KSU to score and take a 3-2 lead in the 8th.
  • Justin Holmes singled to leadoff the eighth and stole second, but KSU's Pinson got two strikeouts and a groundout to strand him at third base.
  • KSU opened the game up in the ninth, scoring five runs. A pair of errors catalyzed the scoring as the Owls tallied four singles to drive in crooked numbers.
