Scintillating Pitching Secures Softball’s Sweep of Central Arkansas

Ospreys With Walk-Off Win in Game One, Clausen Earns Save in Game Two

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -  North Florida softball's dominance in the circle continued again Sunday as the Ospreys (29-10, 8-4 ASUN) swept a doubleheader against ASUN West Division leading Central Arkansas (19-14, 4-5 ASUN) April 3. All told, UNF swept the three-game series after taking Saturday's game, 2-0.

The Ospreys won game one, 1-0, thanks to a walk-off RBI single from Hayley Bejarano in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Like the first two games of the series, a pitcher's duel was the feature in the second game of the twin ball as North Florida edged the Bears behind a two-run third and an all-round outing from pitchers, Erin Kyle and Morgan Clausen.

North Florida is now 23-3 at home on the season after holding the Bears to only two runs all series.

Game 1: UNF 1, UCA 0 (8 innings)
Both teams had chances to score in game one as they combined for 17 stranded runners. After dominant pitching brought the game into extra innings, UNF won the game on Hayley Bejarano's walk-off RBI single back up the middle in the bottom of the eighth.

Pitchers of Record
Win: Morgan Clausen (8-3)
Loss: Jordan Johnson (6-9)

Behind the Line Score
  • UNF loaded the bags in the first with a pair of singles and a walk, but UCA worked out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.
  • Paige Pfent was just inches from breaking the 0-0 tie in the fifth inning, but UCA left fielder Jenne Wildeman went back to rob a two-run home run.
  • UCA got a runner to second base in the 6th before Arends stranded her with a fly out and a strikeout.
  • In the seventh, North Florida escaped UCA's best offensive opportunity. Morgan Clausen entered with the bags juiced and one away before working a soft lineout and groundout.
  • It was UNF's turn to have a good opportunity in the seventh, this time coming in the bottom half. The Ospreys got runners to first and second, but a pair of fly outs allowed UCA to escape.
  • Hayley Bejarano put an end to the game, muscling a walk-off RBI single to shallow center, scoring pinch runner Hadlee Reichert from second base.

Behind the Line Score
  • UNF got the lead in the first on the almost unthinkable. Kayla Harper tagged up at second base and came all the way around to score on a foul out sac fly off Paige Pfent's bat.
  • UCA scored its first run of the series via an infield single, fielder's choice, productive groundout and a pair of wild pitches.
  • After only five runs had been scored up to this point all weekend, North Florida's two-run third seemed like an explosion.
  • Harper keyed the scoring again, drawing a leadoff walk before scoring from first on Savannah Channell's double to right center.
  • Paige Pfent followed by singling through the right side, scoring Channell.
  • UCA nearly tied it in the fifth, getting one to cut the UNF lead to 3-2. Two infield singles and a throwing error on one of the base knocks gave UCA an unearned run.
  • Clausen was clutch in the seventh, working around runners at the corners and one out by getting a pop out and groundout to seal the save.
