FORT MYERS, Fla. - North Florida won doubles, got dominant performances from
Rodrigo Crespo and
Matt Carroll, and
PJ Kotan showed resolve to clinch the match at the fifth slot as men's tennis (16-7) doubled-up Stetson, 4-2, Friday, April 22 in the ASUN Men's Tennis Championship Quarterfinals.
With the win against Stetson (11-10), UNF advances to the semifinals where it'll take on number one-seeded FGCU tomorrow at 5 p.m.
How it Happened
An all important doubles point was decided by UNF's first and second slots.
Jorge Nunez and
Jonas Hartenstein, along with
Nilo Duarte and Crespo, won their matches to get UNF a 1-0 advantage.
Crespo provided a huge lift in singles as well, putting Stetson in a 2-0 hole thanks to a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win against Josh Laka at the sixth slot. That court was decided in just under an hour.
Right behind Crespo was Carroll who won 6-2, 6-1 against Fabian Penzkofer. The Hatters didn't go away, taking the momentum for a short period by winning slots four and one.
Up 3-2 as a team, Kotan came through with a 6-3, 7-5 win to clinch the match, pushing back against Sami Ozzor's late push in the second frame to send UNF to the semifinals.
