TAMPA, Fla. - After getting swept in doubles play, UNF (1-3) rallied to win five of the six singles courts while winning all three sets that went to tiebreak in a 5-2 victory at South Florida (1-4) Friday, Feb. 4. The Ospreys picked up their first win of the year in the team's first contest against a non-Power Five program, using a three-hour and 45-minute match duration to knock off the Bulls.
How it Happened
USF led 1-0 after doubles, taking all three courts. The one-two punch of
Kit Gulihur and
Annabelle Davis provided a crucial momentum-shifting response to open singles play. Davis downed USF's Laura Pellicer, 6-3, 6-3, and No. 32 Gulihur improved to 3-1 in dual singles play with a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Grace Schumacher.
Just as courts four, five and six were gearing up to be a battle, USF did get on the board with a straight-sets win at court two, its lone singles win of the afternoon.
Isabel Oliveira provided a crucial first-set win against Amelie Boy at the four slot. The freshman won the tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4), while cruising to a 6-2 win in the second set. During that time,
Kendall Nash overcame an early deficit, evened the frame up, 5-5, and eventually won the first set in dramatic fashion. Nash took the opening session, 7-6 (8-6), before clinching for the Ospreys with a 6-4 victory in the second.
While the match was clinched with UNF leading, 4-2,
Anslee Long showed incredible resolve to turn around what looked like a quick two-set win for opponent Alexandria Mjos. Mjos won the first set, 6-3, and neared in on a sweep. Long stormed back to force a tiebreaker, swept the seven-point tiebreaker, and won 6-4 in the next frame.
