Men's Soccer Suffers Shutout Loss in ASUN Quarterfinals Against FGCU

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Fifth-seeded North Florida men's soccer just couldn't find its rhythm in Nashville, as it faltered in the quarterfinals of the ASUN Championship tournament against fourth-seeded FGCU, 4-0, on Saturday evening.

The Ospreys recorded four shots total, including three shots on goal, with most of them occurring late in the second half. Facing a first half-deficit after FGCU's goal in the 29th minute, UNF tried to put an offensive opportunity together, but couldn't find a path to the goal before the Eagles added on three more scores in the second half.

GOALS

29' | Markus Maurer (Unassisted) - FGCU
68' | Aedon Kyra (Alon Drey) - FGCU
73' | Davi Alves (Unassisted) - FGCU
88' | Luke Peperak (Unassisted) - FGCU

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The match opened up with its first shot in the seventh minute by FGCU, but it fell over the bar to give possession back to the Ospreys.
  • Luto Tom gave UNF their first shot attempt of the game in the 26th minute but it went off the mark.
  • In the 29th minute, Markus Maurer scored from just outside the box on the rebound from the free kick to give FGCU a 1-0 lead early.
  • A second score was almost made by FGCU in the 37th minute, but a handball was called to keep UNF within a goal of the Eagles.
  • To start the second half, the Ospreys held strong on defense, denying back-to-back corner kicks.
  • UNF saw another shot faced from Maurer, who scored the goal earlier, but it was wide of the net in the 58th minute.
  • In the 63rd minute, Jaylen Yearwood got the first shot on goal of the match for the Ospreys, but the save was made by FGCU.
  • Just moments later, Bryson Smith came back with another opportunity for UNF before it was grabbed again by the keeper.
  • Another score was made by FGCU to go up 2-0 after Alon Drey sent it in to Aedon Kyra for the goal.
  • The third goal of the night was scored by the Eagles from Dani Alves off the free kick at the corner of the box in the 73rd minute.
  • Braden Masker recorded his first shot on goal, but it was saved once again by the FGCU keeper.
  • The Ospreys went down a man in the 79th minute after Alex Barnett was given a red card by the officials.
  • FGCU adds on one final goal in the 88th minute to finalize a 4-0 defeat for the Ospreys in the quarterfinals of the ASUN Championship tournament.

RECORDS

North Florida | 4-8-4 (3-3-2)
FGCU | 8-4-4 (3-2-3)

QUICK KICKS

  • The Ospreys suffered only their second loss since Sept. 17, as they saw either a win or draw in eight of their final 10 matches.
  • Bryson Smith ended the season with a shot on goal in three of the last four games played, including a goal scored against JU.
  • No saves were made by either team in the first half, as the FGCU goal was the only shot on goal from either team through the first 45 minutes.
  • LJ Estes and Herbie Steigelman were the only players to be on the pitch for all 90 minutes.
  • Padraic Gilley was subbed in for Micah Gun late in the second half and recorded his 100th-career save in the 84th minute.
  • UNF had 20 total players see time on the field in their final game of the season on Saturday night.

FROM THE MOUTH OF MARINATOS

"I don't think we played a good first half and went down, 1-0. In the second half, we made some adjustments and put a lot of pressure on them with set pieces early. Then, we got the breakaway with Bryson and the keeper made a good save, which would have made it 1-1 and a new game. Shortly after, we gave up a second set-piece goal and that put us in a hole before we could not overcome a third set piece. We got the seniors on at the end to finish off the game and could not have been more proud of LJ Estes, who, as always, was a difference maker. I am proud of this team for this season's turnaround and our run at the end of the season."
