JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - In the sixth rendition of North Florida volleyball's five-set matches this season, the Ospreys proved victorious once again, fending off a tough Jacksonville State team, 3-2, in five frames Friday, Oct. 21.
Mahalia White posted a 25-kill, 15-dig double-double, while
Rocio Moro broke the 30-dig threshold once again as UNF (7-13, 5-4 ASUN) dispatched an 18-3 Gamecocks (18-4, 6-3 ASUN) team.
UNF took the first two frames before JSU replied with strong volleyball in sets three and four. The Ospreys hit .318 in the decisive set, rallying behind a 70 percent sideout percentage while holding Jacksonville State to .158 hitting as a team.
Solimar Cestero produced another double-digit kill match,
Savannah Cook eclipsed the 50-assist marker and
Maymie Guthrie set a career high with 13 digs.
Kailey McKnight worked an all-round day, going for six kills, four aces, 11 digs and two resounding blocks.
After the dust settled, UNF's 4-0 run to even the first set up at 23-23 and eventually win the frame turned out to be the difference in the contest.
An extremely even match, both teams were just points apart in a variety of statistical categories.

Inside the Sets
- Set 1: After taking a timeout down 22-18, UNF turned the set around … JSU came out of the break with another kill, but the Ospreys rattled off a 4-0 run, keyed by a pair of Maddie Boyd kills and even a Moro kill … Cestero provided the set-winning kill after a JSU service error … Cestero and White had five kills each … UNF posted a more efficient set offensively, while outblocking Jacksonville State, 3-0, in the frame.
- Set 2: Both teams traded 3-0 runs early … down 9-6, UNF posted a 4-0 run, with White notching a kill to give the Ospreys their first lead of the session … North Florida never trailed again, going on a 14-7 run to break an 11-11 tie … the Ospreys committed just two attack errors in the set, while ushering JSU into eight … North Florida tallied four blocks, holding Jacksonville State to one.
- Set 3: The Gamecocks finally got their footing in the third, getting one set back thanks to seven kills from Lena Kindermann … the set featured three ties, but no score changes … JSU tallied 17 kills, its most of any set.
- Set 4: An early start allowed Jacksonville State to get ahead and hold to its lead … JSU posted a 5-0 run to go up, 7-2, riding out the set in the lead … White showed out with another seven kills in the fourth alone.
- Set 5: Despite being tied four times, UNF never allowed Jacksonville State to get in the lead, holding off the Gamecocks, thanks to a 8-3 run to finish off the frame … the run broke a 7-7 tie … White and timely kills from McKnight provided the boost late.
