Ospreys Face Florida for Third Time in Four Years

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida women's tennis begins the spring 2022 season with a road Southeastern Conference test at Florida Sunday, Jan. 23.

Series History
  • UNF and Florida meet for the third time in series history. 
  • This will be the third meeting in four seasons between UNF and UNF.
  • North Florida and Florida last met Feb. 14, 2020 in Gainesville.
  • UF leads the all-time series, 2-0.
  • Kendall Nash, Ana Paula Melilo and Sean Lodzki all competed in the last meeting with UF, three members of the current UNF women's tennis squad.

Scouting Report
  • UF's roster features 10 student-athletes, including five upperclassmen.
  • Roland Thornqvist heads the UF women's tennis program, touting a storied career leading the Gators. Thornqvist is in his 20th season at UF and touts a 451-83 record with the Gators and 525-129 record all-told.
  • Florida went 13-8 and 10-3 in the SEC last season before falling to South Carolina in the SEC Tournament Quarterfinals.
  • Florida advanced to the NCAA Regionals Second Round before falling to USC.
  • Florida's doubles pair of Carly Briggs and Marlee Zein finished 24th in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) doubles ranking of 2021.
  • UF had four pairs ranked in the final ITA rankings of the fall, and two top-100 singles honorees.

Fall in Review
  • The Ospreys had a historic fall and a strong fall slate all across the board.
  • Kit Gulihur and Ana Paula Melilo became the first UNF women's tennis pair in at least UNF's DI era to advance to the ITA Nationals after winning the ITA Southeast Regionals in doubles play. 
  • Melilo and Gulihur downed Florida's Briggs and Zein in the finals.
  • The duo finished the fall ranked No. 9 in the nation. Melio and Gulihur also competed at the ITA All-Americans in Charleston, S.C., earning a win against Bridges and Babic of LSU.
  • Gulihur also made UNF history with a No. 32 singles ranking Dec. 8. She concluded the fall with a UNF Fall Invite Flight A Singles East title, downing Florida's Emma Shelton in the finals.
  • UNF went 28-27 in singles play and 19-11 in doubles play in the fall of 2021.

New to the SWOOPLife
  • Of UNF's eight student-athlete roster, six are returning letterwinners. 
  • Isabelle Oliveira and Anslee Long are the team's lone freshman. Oliveira won three singles matches and five doubles matches in the fall.
  • Long went 4-4 in singles play and turned in a 5-2 mark in doubles play.

What's in Store?
  • UNF plays 10 home matches this spring.
  • The Ospreys play four Power Five foes during the 2022 season, including Florida, Florida State, Auburn and Missouri.
  • North Florida competes against six different conferences during the season, going against teams from the SEC, ACC, Sun Belt, C-USA, AAC and ASUN.
  • The Ospreys go to the ITA Kickoff in Athens, Ga. for their next stop.
  • North Florida doesn't play its home opener until February 12.
