Ospreys Fall to Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. - North Florida men's soccer team suffered their second loss of the season, as they dropped one on the road, 2-1, to Georgia Southern on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Ospreys had not taken any shots up until junior Luto Tom dished a beautiful assist to senior Cormac Begley in the 20th minute to give UNF the first lead of the game.
  • The defense was able to hold the Eagles at bay through the first half, but couldn't hold them for long coming out of the break with Adam Davie scoring the equalizing goal for Georgia Southern in the 58th minute.
  • A few possessions later, Davie once again took the ball and passed it into the box for Jeremiah Luoma to head it in for Georgia Southern to take the 2-1 lead over the Ospreys.
  • UNF had multiple opportunities in the second half to put one in the back of the net, but nothing was falling for the Ospreys in the second half and they fall for the second time this season.

- Both losses this season have been on the road, as the Ospreys have a 1-0-1 record at home and a 1-2-0 record on the road.
- The Ospreys outshot Georgia Southern, 12-10, and had more corner kick opportunities, 5-1, but were not able to convert on those advantages.
- Cormac Begley scored his first goal of the season and the second of his career from Luto Tom, who now has dished out two assists in two straight games.
- This was Begley's first goal since his freshman year where he scored a game-winner against UCF.
- Junior Herbie Steigelman continues to lead the team in minutes starting all five games and only being subbed out once so far this season during a double overtime match.

"Really disappointing result coming off a great game Tuesday night. We knew that this was going to be a tough game and that we were going to have to rotate some players. In the first half, I thought we were the better team and we had a couple chances to go up 2-0, but we couldn't execute. In the second half, I give credit to Georgia Southern because they got us to transition and they scored a great goal." - head coach Derek Marinatos
