Phillips Played Collegiately at UNC Greensboro, Wins Record Holder for Jamaica in Davis Cup
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - UNF men's tennis head coach Matt Lucas is excited to announce the hiring of assistant coach Randy Phillips, a decorated name at the collegiate and professional level.
"I can't wait to be an Osprey!," Phillips said. "I want to give a big thank you to Matt Lucas and the University of North Florida for the opportunity. SWOOP!"
After growing up in Jamaica, Phillips was a 2015 graduate of UNC Greensboro where he made a name for himself in the Southern Conference (SoCon). Phillips emerged as the program's number one player and team captain, putting up the third-most wins in program history.Â
The First Team All-SoCon performer continued his playing days far past college, going on to win the most matches in Jamaica's Davis Cup history. Phillips helped Jamaica earn their first promotion in 10 years, bumping the country up from Group 3 to Group 2. Additionally, he's the first player in national history to earn an ATP ranking in the last decade.
As a 25-year old Phillips had the opportunity to represent Jamaica in the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. His last ATP registered event played was in May of this year in Pensacola.Â
Phillips was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada before moving to and growing up in Jamaica. He later moved to Georgia where he racked up the awards in high school. At Brookwood High School in Snellville, Ga., Phillips helped his team win the Georgia High School Association AAAAA state title. He was named an all-american in 2011.
Phillips will also be pursuing his master's degree at North Florida.
