Baseball Drops Wild Series Opener With FGCU, 12-11

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - UNF scored three in the ninth, but FGCU managed to hang on as the Ospreys (9-12, 3-1 ASUN) fell in a wild series opener against the Eagles, 12-11, Thursday, April 1.

North Florida scored in six different innings, but Florida Gulf Coast (14-10, 2-2 ASUN) scored in eight consecutive innings after a scoreless first frame.

Down 12-8 in the bottom of the ninth, Alex Kachler walked before FGCU got two outs. Tanner Clark singled before Aidan Sweatt walked. Ricky Presno singled and Cade Westbrook doubled, but FGCU got the final out at third base.

Behind the Line Score
  • Alex Kachler hit a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the first, his fifth of the season and second in three games. 
  • Stephen Wilmer clubbed an RBI double to center, scoring Marc Coffers after he was hit by a pitch. 
  • Johnny Long laced an RBI single to right center, scoring Wilmer for a 2-1 lead in the top of the second.
  • FGCU added another in the third. Brian Ellis reached on an error and scored from first on a Richie Garcie double down the left field line.
  • Four singles in a row followed by a Tanner Clark sac fly made it 4-3 UNF in the third. Grant Grodi, Alex Kachler, Trey Spratling-Williams and Blake Marabell all tallied base hits.
  • The Eagles responded, scoring three in the fourth. A pair of errors and two FGCU hits gave the Eagles the 6-4 advantage.
  • UNF tied it, 6-6, in the fourth. Ricky Presno walked, Austin Bogart put down a bunt single and both moved up 90 feet on an Abraham Sequera groundout. FGCU got another out, but with two away shortstop Richie Garcia threw the ball away on a grounder hit his, way scoring both runners.
  • An error snakebit UNF again in the fifth. Cam Krzeminski walked to leadoff the inning, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error.
  • FGCU added one in the sixth for an 8-6 lead. Joe Kinker doubled down the left field line and Krzeminski rolled an RBI single through the right side, all with two outs.
  • UNF used some two-out energy as well in the sixth. Sequera tripled to right center before Grodi hit a frozen rope single to center.
  • FGCU created a 10-7 lead in the seventh. Wilmer singled up the middle before Ian Farrow put down a bunt that catcher Tanner Clark picked up immediately before throwing off the mark to second. With runners at second and third, Long scored Wilmer with a sac fly foul out to right. Brian Ellis plated Farrow with an RBI line drive single into right.
  • The Ospreys scored another in the seventh. Trey Spratling-Williams legged out an infield single, Tanner Clark laced a single to right center and Sweatt scored Spratling-Williams with a single to right.
  • The Eagles moved ahead 11-8 in the eighth. A Krzeminski leadoff single resulted in a run after a stolen base and a pair of wild pitches brought him home.
  • FGCU completed its scoring with one in the eighth. A two-out walk and Krzeminski double to left added another.
  • UNF didn't relent, scoring three in the ninth. UNF loaded the bags, Ricky Presno singled in one and Cade Westbrook doubled to score two, but FGCU cut down pinch runner Isaiah Byars at third base to end it.
