Three-Pointers Fall as UNF Picks Up Fifth Win

JACKSONVILLE - North Florida women's basketball has now won five straight games for the second time in its Division I era as it overcame a third-quarter deficit to tame the Bisons, 74-57, Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena.

North Florida last won five in a row in the 2010-11 season. That team finished the year 13-17 and 11-9 in ASUN play.

Turning Point

North Florida (11-7, 9-2 ASUN) used a 13-2 run over the final 2:33 of the game to secure the win. During the stretch, Jones scored seven points and the Osprey defense held the Bisons to 1-of-7 from the floor.


INSIDE THE GAME

  • North Florida took an early lead, 14-6 by the media timeout. Lipscomb quickly rattled off a 12-0 lead to lead 16-14 after one holding the home team scoreless for the final four minutes of the quarter.
  • Mackins sparked a 17-4 run in the second quarter, scoring 12 of her 25 points during the stretch, to give UNF a 33-24 lead with 3:01 left to play. 
  • Lipscomb responded with an 8-0 run of its to pull with, 33-32, before Moore closed out the half with a layup to give the Ospreys a 35-32 lead at the break.
  • The tide turned for the visitors as the Bisons went on a 12-4 tear to go out front, 44-39 before Emma Broermann hit a triple to spark a short 7-2 spurt for North Florida. Lipscomb's Jalyn Holcomb hit a three on the other side for a 49-46 Bison lead after three.
  • With Bond back on the floor in the fourth, she hit a three to start a 15-2 run and push UNF in front, 61-52 for the Ospreys biggest lead of the game at that time. 
  • The visitors scored five more points, but it was the Ospreys ball game down the stretch as Jones hit a longball with 2:13 to play and never looked back. 


Osprey Fast Breaks

  • Despite being edged off the glass, 41-40, every Osprey that saw the floor gathered at least one rebound. 
  • Jazz Bond played limited minutes due to early foul trouble, but the senior still finished with nine points and five rebounds in 17 minutes.
  • The game saw six lead changes and four tie scores.
  • Lipscomb's biggest lead was five in the third quarter, while the final score was UNF's largest lead.
  • Mackins recorded five or more three-pointers for the fifth time this season. She now owns 56 - 24 short of tying the single-season record.


What's Next

North Florida faces off with Lipscomb Sunday to close the series and awaits league-leading FGCU the following weekend.
