COLUMBIA, S.C. - Facing off with fourth-ranked South Carolina was a tough battle for North Florida women's tennis as the Gamecocks came out on top, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to end the Ospreys' season.
UNF finishes the year with a 17-8 mark and its fifth straight NCAA championship berth. South Carolina (21-3) advances to face Virginia. The match was slated for 12 p.m., but shortly into singles play mother nature made the courts unplayable and forced a delay.
Back in action around 4 p.m., South Carolina continued its strong play from doubles as it rattled off straight set wins at 2, 6 and 3 to close up the match. Rafaela Gomez, Lucia Montaño and Ana Paula Melilo all faced off with nationally-ranked players.
Gomez closes out her career with 60 singles wins to rank 14th all-time in the UNF records. She also closes up with 65 doubles victories to sit in sixth place all-time, just ahead of assistant coach and former player, Quetzali Vazquez. Her classmate, Kinga Gartner, closes up her career as an Osprey as well with 21 singles and 22 doubles wins.
Montano and Melilo are joined by Valentina Mariotto, Constanza Gorches, Florencia Rossi and Sean Lodzki as returners for the 2019-20 season.
