Men’s Tennis Doubles Up Lipscomb, Moves On to Semifinals

No. 3 UNF to Face No. 2 Liberty Tomorrow

DELAND, Fla. - Dominant doubles and a trio of clutch performances from the Ospreys' four through sixth singles slots helped carry UNF (13-10) past Lipscomb (7-14) in the ASUN Men's Tennis Championship Quarterfinals, 4-2, Thursday, April 18.

One and two doubles claimed 6-2 triumphs, vaulting UNF ahead of Lipscomb early.

The Bisons slowed UNF's pace down with some early success in singles. Jorge Oretgon got the best of Nilo Duarte, 6-4, 6-4, tying things at one. Jorge Nunez never took the foot of the gas after his win at second doubles, overwhelming Pedro Uribe, 6-4, 6-2, as UNF went up, 2-1.

Once again Lipscomb evened it, with Victor Chaw getting his second triumph of the year against Sahil Deshmukh at the one slot. Charley Castaing came up clutch, winning his third dual singles match in four chances to regain the lead, 3-2. Castaing staved off Jake Penny, 7-6, and eventually kept his counterpart at bay for the sweep.

Grit propelled Federico Nani to the clincher at the five slot. After losing in his first, Nani stormed back to defeat David Skrabut and seal the match.

Coach Lucas' Comments
"Survive and advance, that's the motto from NC State basketball, my alma mater, and that's what we did today. Credit Lipscomb as they definitely put us on our heels for the first hour or so of singles today. We seemed a bit nervous and passive and they took full advantage. I'm proud of the resiliency we showed pulling through in the end, but we need to be better tomorrow. The boys are excited to play tomorrow, and I feel really confident we will perform at a much higher level." -- Head coach Matt Lucas

Notes
  • Castaing improves to 3-1 in duals.
  • Nani is on a team-high four-match winning streak.
  • UNF is now 15-0 against Lipscomb and 2-0 this season.
  • The match featured two ties and three lead changes.
