Deppermann Dazzles in 4-0 Shutout of NJIT

Redshirt-Senior Fans Across Eight Innings to Take Series Opener

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Brad Deppermann dealt a gem Friday night, baffling NJIT (11-16-1, 3-7 ASUN) with a career-high 11 strikeouts over eight runs of no-run ball as the Ospreys (19-16, 5-5 ASUN) shut down the Highlanders, 4-0, April 12 from Harmon Stadium.

It was UNF's first combined shutout since the Ospreys blanked USC Upstate, 3-0, April 6, 2018.

Behind the Line Score
  • UNF scored another first inning run, going ahead 1-0 after a two-out RBI double inside the first base bag plated Tanner Murphy after the junior drew a walk.
  • NJIT's threatened in the fifth, but Deppermann wiggled out of the jam. Paul Franzoni reached on a muffed throw at first before Michael Anastasia put down a bunt that eventually went for a hit as Deppermann slipped upon fielding the ball. UNF got a fortuitous out as Franzoni rounded third too aggressively on a David Marcano single to left. Chris Berry cut off Blake Marabell's throw in from left and tossed the ball to Abraham Sequera covering third, getting the first out. Jay Prather picked a one-hop throw from Berry on a fielder's choice and then Deppermann got his sixth strikeout to end the threat.
  • UNF uncorked three runs to get some breathing room in the seventh, giving Deppermann a 4-0 lead to work with.
  • Prather singled up the middle, Murphy walked but Hurwitz's sacrifice bunt attempt was too close to Franzoni at catcher as he got Prather at third. Weeks flew out to center but Alex Reynolds bounced an RBI single through the right side, just past a diving first baseman Nick Hussy. Hurwitz reached third on the hit and Reynolds took second on a muffed throw by Jared Donnelly at third base on the throw in from right. David Maberry clubbed a two-RBI double into right center, scoring Hurwitz and Reynolds.
  • Deppermann and Eddie Miller combined to fan six the rest of the way to shut down the Highlanders.
