Semifinal Bound! Ospreys Tame Lions

FLORENCE, Ala. - Fifth-seeded North Florida collected a 55-53 victory on fourth-seeded North Alabama's home floor in the ASUN Women's Basketball Quarterfinals on Friday night.

The Ospreys were led by second-team all-conference selection, Jazz Bond, who collected 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Bond swatted two of the Lions' shots in the final 26 seconds of the game to take UNF to its second-straight ASUN Championship Semifinals.

Thoughts From the Top

"This was a huge win! We executed and got stops when we needed to. Jazz's blocks down the stretch sealed it. I couldn't be more proud of a group of young ladies." -- Head coach Darrick Gibbs.

UNF
NORTH ALABAMA
  • Brittany Panetti | 19 points, 4 blocks, 4 steals
  • Kenysha Coulson | 11 points, 6 rebounds.

Inside the First Half
North Alabama took an early lead in the first quarter, but the Ospreys kicked off a 9-0 run to end the first quarter with a 17-11 lead. UNF continued to hold its advantage through halftime, 29-28. The Ospreys took their biggest lead on a layup from senior Arianna Emanuel-Wright with 6:07 left in the quarter before the Lions chipped away at the visitors' lead. The home team got to within one four times before the half, but UNF continued to keep its distance.

What Happened in the Second Half
North Alabama regained the lead in the third quarter before the Ospreys went on a second 9-0 run with six minutes left in the quarter, aided by two buckets from Adrienne Jackson. The Lions pulled to within 39-37 with less than three left in the frame, but a pair of makes from Ty Purifoy gave UNF the 41-37 lead heading into the final quarter. The final frame found the two squads trading shot for shot, tying the game at 53-all. UNF hit 3-of-6 from the line down the stretch and
Bond blocked a pair of Lions' shots in the last 26 seconds to give UNF the win.

Osprey Fast Breaks
  • At 15-13 this season, North Florida improves on what is already the first winning record as a Division I team in program history.
  • This marks the second-straight quarterfinal road win for North Florida. It is also the second straight season that UNF was swept during the regular season by the team it eventually beat in the quarterfinals.
  • North Florida's defense held the Lions to just 15.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc - well below their 31 percent on the season.
  • The Ospreys have now been blanked from long range in two straight contests.
  • Despite shooting 50 percent from the line in the final quarter, UNF kept its fouls under control, allowing UNA to go to the line just seven times.

What's Next

UNF heads to third-seeded Liberty in the ASUN Championship Semifinals on Wednesday, March 13 at 7 PM ET on ESPN+. The teams split during the regular season with each winning on their home floor.
