PEACHTREE CORNERS, Ga. - UNF (4-7) won three singles points, but the doubles point ended up being the difference as the host No. 49 Georgia State Panthers (5-5) edged UNF, 4-3.
Sahil Deshmukh and
Dominik Barton won second doubles, 6-2. Georgia State clinched the point by securing wins in first and third doubles.
Deshmukh and Barton took care of one and two singles, although Georgia State led 3-2 with four and six singles remaining. Georgia State clinched the match at the four slot though, as Bailey Showers came back to beat
Jorge Nunez. Nunez claimed the first set, but Showers tallied 6-1 and 7-5 victories to win it for the Panthers.
Nilo Duarte picked up a win in the six slot after the match was decided.
Coach Lucas' Comments:
"Gutted after today. Once again we had an opportunity to close the match out and we weren't able to cross the finish line. I'm proud of how we competed in most spots, and credit to Georgia State for hanging around long enough. This is a match that we had and let slip away. We need an entire team effort, not just at certain spots, and then we can be who I thought we were. It's a quick turnaround for a good Charlotte team tomorrow, so hopefully we can respond. -- Head coach
Matt Lucas.
Notes:
- UNF still leads the all-time series, 4-3.
- The Ospreys are in the midst of their longest road stretch of the season.
- This is the first match of the season decided by one point.
- Deshmukh has won five of his last six matches.
